OUT OF AFRICA

In the early years of the C20th tribal artefacts were often regarded as curiosities rather than art. Many people considered them unrefined compared with European art. But in the early 1900’s, as artists in Europe rediscovered their roots, tribal work came to be recognized as a powerful form of artistic expression. Two of the most important artists of the C20th, Picasso and Matisse, were deeply influenced by African masks and textiles, and Matisse himself was a keen collector. The art of the Kuba people (in the modern Democratic Republic of Congo) was particularly influential.

In the course of the last century appreciation of this art grew, and today many collections, such as the Sainsbury Centre have good examples. Occasionally good examples appear at auction. Horner’s auction on 12th February includes an excellent Kuba Mukenga elephant mask. Dating from the first half of the C20th, it is made, like the Sainsbury Centre example, primarily of wood, fabric, beads and cowrie shells. Originally it was worn in ceremonies by high-status Kuba leaders, and its form draws on design elements from the chameleon and elephant. It provides a rare opportunity to acquire an excellent piece from a culture which has greatly influenced the course of western art.

The auction also offers a good selection of ceramics, including an impressive Volkstedt Art Nouveau bowl. Silver includes an extensive canteen, with a total weight of over two kilos, while among the furniture is a George III chest on chest of unusually small proportions. There is the usual good selection of jewellery and collectors’ items, fine Rolex watches, Breitling and Omega, Zenith Elite, etc.

The auction will be held at Acle Gallery on Saturday February 12th commencing 10am.

Viewing Friday February 11th 10am – 7pm & from 8.30am – 10am on the morning of the sale.
